EARNIE: MASCOT DEVELOPMENT
NSW Container Deposit Scheme, Return and Earn

We’re working with the NSW Return and Earn program, the state’s largest litter reduction initiative.

Since the scheme began in 2017, a staggering 9 billion bottles and cans have been recycled and $900m in refunds returned to the people of NSW. This equates to 837,000 tonnes of materials recycled and a reduction in CO2 emissions equivalent to taking more than 400,000 cars off the road for a year. Wow!

We’ve been asked to come up with a new look, personality and engagement strategy for the program’s mascot, Earnie, an adorable wombat. The new strategy will seek to increase engagement with students and families on key aspects of the scheme – such as sustainability, circular economy principles, and recycling – and create a strong foundation from which an exciting range of new learning experiences can be developed in the future.

To get things rolling, we’ll be doing some brainstorming and co-design activities with groups of primary school students in Sydney. More details to follow soon.
