Alternate Reality Game

This Alternate Reality Game was produced by members of the Deeper Richer team in 2014, and teaches the foundations of the Chinese language to students aged 8-14.


The project was developed in partnership with the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education and Education Services Australia, as part of the Federal Government Language Learning Space project.

The experience begins when a strange person runs into a classroom, screams at the students in Chinese, and then runs out again, leaving behind a yellow envelope with a red stamp on it. Inside the envelope the students discover a piece of paper with a single Chinese character on it, and a URL, and so begins the learning adventure – which cuts across video, blogs, online, social media, and location-based games. More than three thousand students have taken part in the game to date.
